In the 1940s Hedy Lamarr was a well known Hollywood actress. But the “most beautiful woman in the world”, as she was called, led a secret life as an inventor. In her most famous patent she suggested fitting a player piano in a torpedo. Although rejected at the time by the Navy, the basic idea behind it – frequency hopping – is still used today in cell phones, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
In den 1940er Jahren war Hedy Lamarr eine bekannte Hollywood Schauspielerin. Doch die „schönste Frau der Welt”, wie sie genannt wurde, führte ein geheimes Doppelleben als Erfinderin. In ihrem bekanntesten Patent schlug sie vor, ein mechanisches Klavier in ein Torpedo einzubauen. Obwohl damals von der Marine abgelehnt, wird die grundlegende Idee dieses Patents – das Frequenzsprungverfahren – bis heute für Mobiltelefone, WLAN oder Bluetooth genutzt.
